The following essay was authored by Nadia.

On August 26th 2006, The Missouri Stream Team hosted its annual litter clean up. This organization helps maintain the Meramec River's shores from Byrnesville, Missouri to Fenton Missouri. The Stream Team crew usually consists of people that frequently use the river and think it is important to preserve the rivers' banks; not all of the volunteers fit this category, though. Some people, including the group I brought and myself, simply think of it as a way to give back to the community.

When my mom ran across the article, I thought it would be a great way to continue the efforts of my Girl Scout Gold Award. I quickly gathered a group of my friends and family members. We arrived at George Winter Park, in Fenton, and the weather was quite dreadful. We did not let it damper our spirits, though. We started off by walking the shorelines as we collected several bags of litter. After that, we walked over to the boat ramp. People who were also volunteering brought their boats so that they could transport people to all parts of the river. We all climbed into the boats and cleaned numerous parts of the river for hours. We found everything from stoves to tires to cans. A number of bags were collected throughout the entire day, and everyone felt that we had accomplished something.

By the end of the day the river looked extremely better and we were extremely proud of ourselves. We found our results rather interesting. Here we were, a bunch of teenagers cleaning and recycling in the environment, yet most adults don't even practice recycling. That made us feel extremely proud. Something that we thought that could reduce the litter amount was putting trash cans on all parts on the banks. The main beach of the river had trashcans, but most people don't stay there. They take their boats to different parts, and there were no trashcans. If the parks department added trash cans, I think they would find it beneficial. If the parks don't do anything about it now, they are going to spend much more money later to fix the problem.

My project was beneficial; it had a widespread effect on peoples' attitudes towards littering. My friends and family are now more attentive when it comes to the problems with littering. It is extremely important for everyone in society to contribute to the problems of society. If we don't fix the problems now, everyone in the world will be paying for it.
